The Breaks

It is not my intention to become a music critic. Nor is it my intention to provide shameless plugs for old pals when they make music and attempt to make their mark on the music scene with a locally produces album. It is, however, my intention to celebrate this long long awaited audio work of art, The Breaks, by singer, songwriter, friend and goofball BJ Kocen. Make no mistake, this recording is worth every cent you'll pay for it and more.
Produced and arranged by Paul Curreri, this album has a kind of boss tweed feel to it. With just a hint of vintage style production, Beeg is able to fall right into that wholesome groove that I have always known in his music. There are no bombs on the disk, they are all hits, in my opinion, and each one has its sweet spot, a plunge to the soul, and the tendency to leave you smiling with a song stuck in your head.
A personal favorite is "The Sudden Move," an old timey standard sounding tune that guest features Devon Sproule as a wispy harmony. Her knack for laying sown a sweet and summery vocal harmony is, again, in my opinion, second to none... period. I have been following her music for several years and I have to say, Beeg chose well to have her appear on this track... no song on the album would have been better suited for it.
Stardom, takes you to the driver's seat with a stiff backbone and a proud demeanor letting you know just who is in charge of this ride. Though I may be biased as I have played this song many times, I was not bitter to hear this tune played exceptionally well with a sweet drum beat, rolling bass lines and a rockin feel to it that the tune just seemed to be begging for all these years.
Last of my favorites for this album is a song simply titles "Harry." Its nothing more than a simple little diddy that does what Beeg does best... tells a story. It elegantly tells the story of a coupla nameless fellas that live on an island... and a guy named Harry, that knows just when to offer drinks, and say "ummm hmmm" at just the right time to bring peace to the island.
Wholesome, warm, fulfilling and right on time, (though, I really could say that its about time) this album comes highly recommended by me, if that matters for anything to you.
Beeg, keep your hands on the wheel, and I hope that this cd earns you enough to produce another in short order. Not yet available by any internet downloadable means... I suggest that you check Beeg out on Facebook here.
