Racing Day!

Pine wood derby only comes once a year, and around here, its a bit of a big deal.  Palm sanders and Dremel tools chip and grind away rough spots as the boys make design decisions while having a great time building their cars. This year, Bryan opted to create a car with a "Mad Max" theme (no, he has not seen the movie!)  We took copper piping and cut sections to mount over the rear axle.  Wesupervised then built on a Lego carriage and mounted rough looking riders, complete with armaments.  Jacob, still new to the concept of Pine wood racing, opted to construct a shark.  Three fins were attaches by scoring and shaving settlement grooves into the wood and placing rawhide pieces, cut to resemble fins.  With googlie eyes placed, and a ridiculously painted mouth, the shark mobile was appropriately named "Stupid Shark."

Bryan and his car

"I had lots of fun and I love racing pine wood derby cars.  I love making them with my dad.  it is fun trying to win every year, but I haven't accomplished that yet.  Every year, I enjoy making a different theme and improving the technical designs that make my cars faster."  Bryan, this year, is a WeBLOS 1.  This enables him to actually camp without a parent and encourages him to be more active in the leadership roles of the pack.  His den leader has commented that he is a very bright kid and that he enjoys having Bryan in his den.

Jacob and the Stupid Shark

"It was fun.  I had a great time.  I liked that they had dough nuts at the race for us to eat.  I ate 4!  I cheered for my car and my friends cars. " Says Jabob Dowd. This year, Jacob is a wolf.  He enjoys having fun with his friends in his den and doing lots of fun activities.  Jacob is looking forward to the Spring Camp out, which takes place every year.  There are daytime activities including fishing, BB gun shooting and archery.  Jacob's favorite activity, however, is archery.  The night time camp out activities, which include a bonfire and scout skits, are fun,and so is the cracker barrel, where hot cider and hot chocolate, s mores and ghost stories are fun for all who are not afraid.
